wainscoting tall craftsman style

I love the prints Donna placed on the plate rail above the wainscoting.

Does this kitchen look familiar to you?

It should, it’s the kitchen that’s featured on our Subscribe image on the right side of your screen.

Donna was in the mood for a color and decor change in her Craftsman style kitchen, so she made a dramatic switch from dark blue walls to light gray.

And of course it turned out beautiful, just like all of Donna’s decorating projects!

Here’s another picture from a different angle and a list of the colors she used.

Craftsman style kitchen moldings

Donna combined a nice mix of contemporary decor in her Craftsman style kitchen.

Benjamin Moore Paint Colors

  • Walls are Stonington Gray #HC-170
  • Moldings are White Dove #OC-17

History of This Craftsman Kitchen

I know this kitchen looks like it’s part of a mid 1920’s – 30’s Craftsman bungalow, but it’s really a two-story home built in the early 1970s.

I designed, installed and painted the moldings myself eleven years ago working from an original Craftsman style pattern book.

The reason I bring this up is because I want to you to think about the molding potential in your home.

You don’t need a historic home to have historic moldings.  Install them yourself!

You can do this because most homes built in the last ninety or so years have little to no discernible architectural style — your home can be any period style you want it to be!

Change the Wall Color But not the Moldings

Donna’s color change illustrates a point I like to make about the power of moldings in your home.

That is, take your time installing the moldings you want.

Then carefully put two quality coats of great paint on them and the walls.

Now for the rest of your life you can make dramatic changes to you home by simply changing the wall color.

Keep the Moldings, change the wall color.

That’s all you have to do for a fresh, dramatic change to any room in your home.

Thanks for sending the pictures, Donna!
